Scotchlite Reflective Tape
Motion Lab Systems maintains stocks of Scotchlite 8850 retro-reflective tape, suitable for covering markers or other targets used by many 3D measurement systems from companies such as Motion Analysis Corporation, Peak Performance Technologies, Qualysis, and Vicon Motion Systems. Manufactured by 3M™ the Silver Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Film (Scotchlite™) is composed of wide angle, exposed retro-reflective lenses bonded to a rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesive. The reflective surface is protected by a white paper carrier for ease in handling and is removed after application. A plastic liner protects the adhesive surface until the tape is applied.
Whenever two or more pieces of Scotchlite™ are used together on a single surface or as a set, they should be matched to ensure uniform reflectivity. Die-cutting is recommended, although it can also be hand-cut or guillotined.
- Remove the plastic liner, exposing the pressure sensitive adhesive.
- Do not remove paper carrier. With adhesive side down, press firmly the tape onto the substrate or marker ball by starting on one end and gradually working to the other end. This will prevent air bubbles. Do not let the adhesive touch the substrate until just before pressure is applied.
- When working with curved surfaces, additional adhesion and smoothing may be gained by evenly heating the tape for five seconds with a blow dryer set to a low temperature setting - commercial "heat-shrink" guns are NOT recommended.
- Remove the white paper liner by lifting one corner and pulling back over itself in a continuous, smooth manner.
The actual life of the Scotchlite reflective material depends on cleaning method and wear conditions. The recommended cleaning method is to damp wipe the material, using small amounts of warm water and mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly to remove any traces of detergent and dry with a soft cloth or allow to air dry - do not machine wash or bleach.
